Pro Watercross is excited to announce the newly conceived division of Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) Closed Course Racing, introduced as SUPcross. With doing so, we are proud to announce Evan Young as the Managing Director of Pro Watercross’ newly developed SUPcross division.

Stand-up Paddleboard (SUP) racing is typically done on a long course, most commonly occurring on rivers or along the shoreline of lakes and ocean waters. SUPcross uses the same closed course race track that is used in watercross (aka jet ski racing). SUPcross offers the most dynamic setting found on flat water. It bridges the extensive gap between standard “straight-line” SUP races, and the more extreme elements of whitewater SUP racing; which will eliminate any unforeseen hazards, and establish a safe, contained environment within a closed course race track. SUPcross will be more exciting for spectators and fans bringing them closer to the action.

Evan Young graduated from Marshall University in 2008 with a B.A. in Psychology & Minor in Communications, and is the founder, owner, and lead instructor of Appalachian Boarding Company. Evan is the current State Director of the American Canoe Association in West Virginia and is an active member of the Putnam Wellness Coalition. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Putnam Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, on the Race Committee for the Capital City Challenge, and as a council member for the Rivers to Ridges Heritage Trail.

Evan began his SUP racing endeavors on a local level by breaking into the adventure triathlon scene as the first to ever Stand Up Paddleboard in the Capitol City Challenge-Run Row Ride in Charleston, West Virginia, which had before only been attempted by way of kayak. His most notable wins in the realm of racing include winning 1st place Overall Male Team by Stand Up Paddleboarding vs. Racing Kayaks in the Capitol City Challenge – Run, Row, Ride Triathlon, as well as the “Run for the River” adventure triathlon on the Coal River in West Virginia. He is also the defending champion of the Kentucky Waterman Series (Short Distance SUP Division).

Evan has already had a hand in the behind-the-scenes efforts needed to bring the SUP closed course racing tour to reality with working to create competition rules and scoring procedures, as well as working with sponsors, venues and athletes to prepare for the premier round for SUPcross in Sparks, Nevada on the weekend of June 30th.

“I am super excited to be working with Pro Watercross in bringing SUPcross into the world spotlight” stated Evan, when asked about his new position... “I can see this being an Olympic sport someday and knowing that I was part of it from the inception is a blessing” continued Evan.

Evan has been passionate about pioneering the sport of stand up paddleboarding from the beginning and leverages that passion when organizing events. He'll be bringing his wealth of experience and hands-on interaction with regional SUP racing together with his knowledge and understanding of the sport to Pro Watercross to guide its expansion in this whole new arena of SUP closed course racing, known as SUPcross.
